At a time when pop was dominated by dance music and pop metal, Guns N’ Roses brought raw, ugly rock & roll crashing back into the charts. They were not nice boys; nice boys don’t play rock & roll. They were ugly, misogynist, violent; they were also funny, vulnerable, and occasionally sensitive, as their breakthrough hit “Sweet Child O’ Mine” showed. While Slash and Izzy Stradlin ferociously spit out dueling guitar riffs worthy of Aerosmith or the Stones, Axl Rose screeched out his tales of sex, drugs, and apathy in the big city; bassist Duff McKagan and drummer Steven Adler were a limber rhythm section that kept the music loose and powerful. Guns N’ Roses’ music was basic and gritty, with a solid hard, bluesy base; they were dark, sleazy, dirty, and honest — everything that good hard rock and heavy metal should be. Guns N’ Roses released their first EP in in 1986, which led to a contract with Geffen; the following year, the band released their debut album, Appetite for Destruction. They started to build a following with their numerous live shows, but the album didn’t start selling until almost a year later, when MTV started playing “Sweet Child o’ Mine.” Soon, the album shot to number one and Guns N’ Roses became one of the biggest bands in the world. By the end of 1988, they released G N’ R Lies, which paired four new, acoustic-based songs with their first EP. Guns N’ Roses began to work on the follow-up to Appetite at the end of 1990. In October of that year, the band fired Adler, claiming that his drug dependency caused him to play poorly; he was replaced by Matt Sorum from the Cult. During recording, the band added Dizzy Reed on keyboards. By the time the sessions were finished, the new album had become two new albums. After being delayed for nearly a year, the albums, Use Your Illusion I and II, were released in the fall of 1991. The Illusions showcased a more ambitious band; while there were still a fair number of full-throttle guitar rockers, there were stabs at Elton John-style balladry, acoustic blues, horn sections, female backup singers, ten-minute songs with several different sections, and a good number of introspective, soul-searching lyrics. In short, they were now making art; amazingly, they were successful at it. While the albums sold very well initially, the band soon fell out of favor. Stradlin left the band by the end of 1991 and with his departure the band lost their best songwriter. Once Nirvana’s Nevermind hit the top of the charts in early 1992, there was a distinct division between what was cool in hard rock and what wasn’t; Guns N’ Roses — with all of their pretensions, impressionistic videos, models, and rock star excesses — were very uncool. The band didn’t fully grasp the change until 1993, when they released their album of punk songs, The Spaghetti Incident?; it received some good reviews, but the band failed to capture the reckless spirit of not only the original versions, but their own Appetite for Destruction. By the middle of 1994, there were rumors flying that the band was about to break up, since Rose wanted to pursue a new, more industrial direction and Slash wanted to stick with their blues-inflected hard rock.

Reviewing every track of a buried rock-n-roll treasure.

WARNING: singer Lynn Carey lives up to the band’s name.

Think of flamboyant female vocalists in hard rock history. Maybe Janis Joplin, Joan Jett, Lita Ford, or punk’s Wendy O. Williams come to mind. The best of the bunch is probably the least well known today: Mama Lion’s “carnivorous” Lynn Carey. With greater range and tonal appeal than Joplin; more versatile than Jett, more feral than Ford, and more coherent than Wendy O., Lynn was a true “torch singer” with a lavalike style. Her bluesy rock vocals are eruptive: she bleeds, she aches, she pounces, she claws, she screams, she demands. Her bluesy rock vocals are magmatic: she churns, she growls, she struts, she purrs, she lures, she scalds. Lynn can suck a lyrical line dry and spew it back with fiery abandon. She “honky-tonk” snarls, her sound corresponding well with the Jagger/Richards image of a “Honky Tonk Woman.” She don’t “go gentle into that good night.” Lynn’s is a savage grace, yet it is not mindlessly indulged. In every song, it is purposefully directed. Her delivery is propulsive, emphatic, and often extreme, but always in soulful touch with and plumbing the depths of lyrical meaning and relevant emotion. She is one of the most exciting female vocalists in hard rock history and my personal favorite.

I suppose there was/is some “shock value” to “Preserve Wildlife”’s album photo depicting Lynn “breast-feeding” a lion cub. Given the album’s title, however, I think the photo is thematically right on target. Arresting or controversial album imagery often deflects attention away from the quality of music with which it is ociated. One listen to “Preserve Wildlife” by a favorably-inclined ear and you will agree with me that, in this case, the opposite holds true—and the music quality is high.

The “lion roars” and “lightning-bolt” sounds that you hear are MY embellishments and not part of the original recordings. Consider them audio/video “exclamation points” and nothing more.

Lynn Carey’s entire catalogue of rock AND jazz music (especially, in the latter case, the swingin’ CD “Good Times!”) is worth exploring both for its variety and as a showcase for her amazing interpretational vocal range. Her early work with Neil Merryweather can be enjoyed on CDs courtesy of Paul Surdin’s Music Unlimited: http://musicunlimited.homestead.com/musicunlimited.html

In December 1972, Lynn lent her physical beauty to the cover and pages of PENTHOUSE magazine. I have–with creative good judgment–included several of her “Pet” photos in this video. Now go get the back issue if you are intrigued!

Jim Howard is credited as Mama Lion’s keyboardist. In the years succeeding his band stint, as James Newton Howard–film composer, orchestrater, and score producer–he has been enjoying a prolific and successful career. He has won several ASCAP awards and an Emmy. One example of his work: the theme music for the TV drama “ER.”

This video abides by YouTube’s Terms of Use in a relevant and decisive respect: Nudity. I have scrupulously and artfully edited Lynn’s photos to ensure that “areas typically covered by a bathing suit or underwear” are never—not even for a single frame—fully revealed. THAT was a point of honor for me. ographic photos, by definition, feature explicit nudity. The photos I have selected approach, but never reach that threshold. Exposure? Yes. “Indecent?” No.

I have also incorporated a brief film sequence in which actress Cynthia Myers body is draped with nothing but shadows. Repeated, objective scrutiny of this footage has convinced me that these shadows more than sufficiently veil/obscure “areas typically covered by a bathing suit or underwear.” In fact, Cynthia’s form is reduced to silhouette, which, in terms of nudity, does not qualify as the substance thereof. I do not believe a mere silhouette of a glorious female form violates YouTube’s Terms of Use. Accordingly, I will defend my use of the same to the hilt—and successfully, I daresay. To all reasonably indulgent YouTube viewers: I appreciate your sustaining me and welcoming a harmless, exciting, and not contextually-inappropriate** glimpse of adumbrated gorgeousness.

If you are a professional with any legitimate concerns about this video’s content, please do not hesitate to send me a private message. I will respond promptly and courteously. If, otherwise, a viewer cares to publicize his/her (positive) reactions, please do so by commenting; however, I must warn you—in a friendly way—to avoid lewd or disparaging remarks—these will be pounded by lion paw, disemboweled by lion claw, and ravaged by lion maw. (of course)

Thanks sincerely for watching and for your benevolent indulgence.

Özlem Tekin is a Turkish singer, TV show host and occasional actress, primarily known for her music. Though she started out in the hard rock genre, her music has progressed to incorporate different styles such as house, punk, and Turkish folk music.

Özlem Tekin was born in California, United States into a Turkish-American family. Her father Talat Tekin was a prominent Turkologist at UC Berkeley. The Tekins moved to Turkey when she was four years old. Özlem grew up in Ankara, where she went on to study classical western music at the Hacettepe University Music Conservatory in Ankara, specializing in the clarinet.

She started out as the vocalist in The Bad. The Bad was an underground rock band like most other rock bands and they would perform gigs at clubs, often playing covers of other popular bands. In 1993, she met ?ebnem Ferah, who has now also become another recognized rock musician in Turkey, and became the keyboard player of the successful all-female rock band Volvox. Özlem occasionally performed as the lead singer as well.

While still in Volvox, she met Hakan Peker and they started working on her debut solo album in 1994. This album, Kime Ne (literally, who cares?), was eventually released in January 1996 to widespread critical acclaim. The first single A?k Her?eyi Affeder Mi? (Does love forgive everything?), written by Barlas Erinç shot to the top of the charts. Other hit tracks include Duvaks?z Gelin (Bride without a veil) and Herkes ?ansl? Do?muyor (Not everyone is born lucky).

Then, Özlem Tekin left Hakan Peker’s record label and went to ?stanbul Plak which also had acquired other popular singers like Tarkan. Her second album Öz was released in February 1998. This spawned Yol which became an enormous hit. Laubali came out a year later to great success.

Özlem started up her own TV show on Kanal D called Yaz Rüzgar? (Summer Wind) in 2000. This aired for 1 hour, 5 days a week and received high ratings. In year 2003 she started acting in the TV series “Sil Ba?tan” (From the Beginning). This show aired for 2 years, also with high ratings. In 2005, she starred in the stage musical “Mucizeler Komedisi” (The Comedy of Miracles). That very year, her new album “10987654321″ was released, which presented a much harder sound than her previous effort.

In 2006 she played in the Cem Y?lmaz movie “Hokkabaz” (The Trickster). In the same year, she also played in the tv movie “Maçolar”. After this experiment, she met with a nice surprise which is a forest for her, owing to her tenth year in music sector. After a long preparation, the forest was completed and named as “Özlem Tekin-Bahar Orman? (Özlem Tekin-Spring Forest)” by her fans.

In 2007, she played in another TV movie “Fesupanallah” and nowadays she is preparing for her new project which is a theatre play “Kim O”. Özlem Tekin will share the roles with a famous Turkish thespian Metin Serezli in this project.

In 2008,she started a new TV programme in one of the most famous national music channel in Turkey, Kral Tv. The programme’s name is “Hiperaktif” (means a person that can not stand without any reactions) because of Özlem’s character. Özlem is fully suitable for the programme format in her second TV announcer experience after “Yaz Rüzgar?”.

Hole Puncher

come be a part of me from my blood from my soul
come take a bit of my bread my water

i have already fallen, the pavement is my bed
come you too punch me, come on you too punch me

i have already fallen, i am afraid inside and outside
come you too punch me, come on

somehow i have got used to these harsh wind
this desolate life withextreme climate
you too will drill my soul like a hole puncher
i know don’t stop come
you too punch
you too punch
come you too punch
